User guidelines
Mandatory fields
For each search type the Your Ref. field must be entered or selected. This field can be used to link searches to a specific job within your organisation. This reference will appear on your monthly accounts. It may also be used to retrieve a history of your searches.
Search options
The following search options are currently available:
- Single Mark Search
- Radial Mark Search
- Radial Coordinate Search
- Polygon Search
Note: If any of these searches exceed 100 marks, you will be asked to refine your search criteria.
Single mark search
Retrieves information for one specific survey mark.
- Select the mark type from the pick list, enter the mark number and press the "Search" button.
In the case of Trig Stations, the station name can be used as the search key instead of the number. - Select "Trigonometric Station" from the pick list, enter part or all of the mark name, and press the "Search" button.
- After the last mark is selected, press the "Search" button.
Note:
that by typing part of the name, such as "Black", SCIMS Online will return more than one result, i.e. Black Mountain, Black Range, Blacky etc...
If more than one mark is required, rather than doing individual searches, simply press the "Add Another Mark" button which adds the mark to the search list.
Radial mark search
Retrieves information for all survey marks within a specified radius from a known survey mark.
- Select the mark type from the pick list, and enter the search radius in metres.
The search may be refined to suit user needs in a number of ways: -
- Search For: allows the search to be refined by selecting which mark types are included in the search.
- Sort By: determines how the results of the search are listed.
- Horizontal and Vertical Class: allows the search to be further refined by selecting a "Class" accuracy category from the pick lists.
For example, if Vertical Class "LC:A" is selected, then only marks with that Class or better will be retrieved (i.e. L2A, LA, LB, LC, 2A or A).
The default is "All", which will retrieve all marks in the search area, regardless of their Class.
- Once all the options are complete, press the "Search" button.
Radial coordinate search
Retrieves information for all survey marks within a specified radius from a specified coordinate. The coordinate may be entered in either Geographic or Grid coordinates using GDA94 or AGD66. Care must be taken to select the correct zone for the grid coordinates option.
- Select the type of coordinate and enter the values.
- If required, the search may be refined using the same criteria as for the "Radial Mark Search" above, otherwise press the "Search" button.
Polygon search
Retrieves information for all survey marks within an area defined by a polygon. The vertex of the polygon may be defined by a series of known marks and/or sets of coordinates in GDA94 and/or AGD66.
If required, the search may be refined using the same criteria as for the "Radial Mark Search" above, otherwise press the "Search" button.
Search results and purchasing data
Once the search is complete the next screen will display information on survey marks that satisfy the search criteria. This data will include:
- Search Summary containing your reference, search number, search criteria, date and time, number of marks returned and the total cost of marks selected.
- Summary of Marks Found containing mark type and number, status, trig station name (if appropriate) and the suburb/locality to check the location of the search results.
Also, for each mark, the available horizontal and vertical datums are displayed.
N/A indicates that coordinates are not available in that datum.
Class and Order refers to the new accuracy standards as defined by:
Inter-Governmental Advisory Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM)
Standards and Practices for Control Surveys ICSM Publication No. 1 (SP1)
To assist with selecting marks, pressing the "View DCDB Plot" icon will return an image showing individual marks plotted over the State's cadastre.
- The date (where available) refers to when the coordinates were entered into the data-base.
- Under "View Mark Coords", check boxes are available to select or de-select marks to be purchased.
Only those marks with "Established" horizontal coordinates or "acceptable" heights are charged for. You will be able to identify these as their mark type and number are in a bolder font.
(Refer to Pricing below for definitions of Established and Acceptable). - Under "Order Sketch Plan", check boxes are available to select or de-select sketch plans to be purchased.
Locality sketch plans for survey marks are at present not available to view online. However as a temporary measure, if selected, the plans will be sent by fax or email to the designated adress entered in the bottom of the form or mailed to the address supplied at registration. - The total in the "Selected Mark Cost" field will be adjusted accordingly.
Once all selections are complete, to view coordinates and other related information, simply press the "Purchase" button.
As before, details of the search criteria are returned together with coordinates and heights as selected.
The "View DCDB Plot" icon remains available to view the mark's location.
The results may be:
- Viewed on the screen
- Printed using the print button, or;
- Saved to file by pressing the "Save To File" button.
If saving to file, the user can select the coordinate type and download the results in a number of file formats.
Note: Any number of files may be downloaded, however only one coordinate type and datum is possible per file.
Pressing the "View Mark's Full Details" icon will return a new window containing the following information about the mark:
- Mark type, number, name, status and alias where appropriate.
- Mark location (Ground level, building, reservoir, silo etc.).
- Suburb or locality.
- GDA94 coordinates (geographic and MGA) and accuracy statements.
- AGD66 coordinates where available (geographic & ISG / AMG) and accuracy statements.
- AHD71 heights where available and accuracy statements.
- Source (Unique identifier for the source of the coordinate information). Click on the source number to obtain more information.
- Date (when coordinates were entered into the database).
- Date placed (when mark was physically placed in the ground) and by whom.
- Monument Type (Physical description of mark e.g. concrete pillar, GI Pipe, Brass Plaque etc).
- Status history. (Lists any change in status over time).
If the mark has any witness / eccentric marks connected to it, the witness mark information can be viewed in a seperate window by pressing the "Witness Marks" button.
If the mark has a beacon, the beacon information can be viewed in a seperate window by pressing the "Beacon Details" button.
If the mark is a Trig Station, further relevant information can be viewed in a seperate window by pressing the "Trig Report" button (This function also available on the main search result screen).
Search history
This option recovers information regarding previous searches. Information is retrieved by entering:
- The SCIMS Online search number (each session is allocated a unique sequential transaction number), or
- Your reference entered with each search, or
- A date range.
To recover the search number, date and time, search type, your reference and the cost of the searches, simply press the "Search" button.
Note: If the search was carried out within the last 28 days, clicking on the search number will re-do the search at no cost.
