Frequently asked questions

Blowering Dam on Hume and Hovell TrackDo I need to book for the walk or a campsite?

It is not needed to book for the walk. However, you should always inform a responsible person of your walking itinerary.

What is the best time to walk the Hume and Hovell Walking Track?

Spring and autumn if you are walking the whole track. During summer the sections following Burra Creek near Tumbarumba and Goobarragandra River near Thomas Boyd Trackhead can also be pleasant.

The track between Lankeys Creek Campsite and Bowna Road is closed during the summer months due to the isolated nature of the track and the risk posed by fire. During winter the higher sections of the track is affected by snow falls.

Do I have to organise food drops on Hume and Hovell Walking Track?

Walker's type food can be purchased at Yass, Tumut, Talbingo, Tumbarumba and Albury. By special arrangement food parcels can be left with the ranger at Wee Jasper, Thomas Boyd Trackhead, the adjoining farm at Henry Angel Trackhead and at Lankeys Creek. Contact the Hume and Hovell Walking Track Co-ordinator E:warwick.hull@lands.nsw.gov.au for more details.

Can I ride my mountain bike on the walking track?

The Hume and Hovell Walking Track may be used by mountain bikes where the track uses Public or Crown roads or fire trails. Where the track uses ‘single track’ or specially constructed walking track, bikes must be pushed or carried. A popular section for mountain bikes is between Lankeys Creek Campsite and Tunnel Road (see Sectional Map 5). This section is located on a ridge fire trail within Woomargama National Park.

What facilities are provided at the campsites?

Pit toilets, fireplaces, covered picnic tables and tank water at some camps where streams are not located.

Is there water available on the track or at campsites?

In many locations the track is located close to streams or lakes so only a short diversion is required to obtain water. Water is available at most campsites with the exception of Browns Creek and Tin Mines due to drought.

Can I use the water from the rivers and streams near the walk?

In most cases the water is fine for drinking. However, just to be safe we recommend that walkers treat all water.

Can I light a camp fire?

There are fireplaces provided at the campsites which can be used, providing there is not a Total Fire Ban.

What happens when a Total Fire Ban is put in place?

If a Total Fire Ban is in place for the region then no naked flame is permitted, even in fireplaces. Walkers should check local conditions before walking and if in doubt, play it safe and do without a fire.

What is the grading of the track?

The track varies as it has a natural surface. However, most sections are rated as easy walking. There are some sections that are steep and these have been rated as moderate or hard. Check the cross section of terrain on each Sectional Map. The contours on the map will also give you a good indication of the terrain.

Is the track difficult to navigate?

The track is fully signposted; however, at times fallen trees or vegetation may obscure some signs. Walkers should carry the relevant Sectional Map and a compass at all times.

Is mobile phone reception available on the track?

Mobile phone coverage on the Track varies a great deal and cannot be guaranteed.

Is there public transport to stages of the track?

Public transport is available via Country Link XPT T: 13 2232 or rail bus to Yass, Tumut, Tumbarumba and Albury. The track is intersected by school bus routes and by special bookings drivers will transport walkers. For more details please refer to your map kit or make an enquiry.
