Tweed sand bypass project
The Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypass Project is a joint NSW and Queensland initiative restoring the southern beaches of the world-renowned Gold Coast,
while improving navigation to the entrance of the Tweed River.
Beachgoers, the local fishing industry, and local residents alike benefit from the project, in which the Department of Lands is the lead agency.
The project works by intercepting large quantities of sand naturally moving northward along the coast under wave action, before it reaches the mouth of the Tweed River. The sand is then pumped under the river to the Gold Coast, nourishing beaches famous for their surfing.
