Stock Reserves

Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs) were formed to provide for the movement of stock into areas of new settlement. Soon after they were established, these corridors were also used to Travelling stock reservetransfer stock to market.

Flexible and inexpensive, TSRs provided an attractive means to pastoralists 'overlanding' their stock. Droving was the principal means of moving livestock throughout the State well into the 1950s.

These Crown reserves have mostly been administered by Rural Lands Protection Boards since 1902.

Improved transport has seen decreased use of TSRs for walking stock. Other uses of TSRs include emergency refuge during floods and drought, as well as some local agistment.

Today, TSRs are valued as corridors containing native vegetation ecosystems, providing a habitat for flora and fauna, as well as enhancing the scenic value of the Landscape. For local towns, the TSRs often provide opportunities for recreation, particularly where these reserves include watercourses.
